Chapter 2. Why does Sunday wear off so quickly?

Posted by Jamell Hamilton

After Shaking hands, hugging, smiling, laughing, holding several side bar conversations with different church members, and meeting with their committees and ministries, Jan and William get into their Mercedes to go home. They lived about forty miles from the church so they had a lot of time to talk on the way to and from church. “That was some kind of worship service today, huh cakes”, exclaimed William. “Cakes” was his pet name for her since they dated in college. “Yep, the sermon was really good”, “…and the singing? I almost jumped out of my seat”. “Is that right?”, William replied. Then there was a moment of silence. Jan waited for the silence to be broken by her husband’s insecurity. She turns and looks out of the window.   Then, just as she anticipated… “Well how did I do on my prayer, cakes?” Jan thought that she could use this as an opportunity to express her true feelings and desires to William. “It was….well….it was…”, “Okay, now What!!! What is it?!!!!”, “ You can say something positive about the sermon and the singing but when it comes to my prayer you can’t even find the words to say?!!!” “Was it that pitiful?!!!!”, “ You never have anything good to say about me!!!!!”.   Jan took a pause and thought before she answered him.   She hesitated and said, “ It’s just that I wish you would pray with me at home”.   William gazed back and forth at her while attempting to drive. His eyes had a glare that sent chills down Jan’s spine. The look on William’s face told Jan that it was time for her to just be quiet. The William that was just praying before the church with such poetic grace was now in a rage. Church service had not been let out for two hours before “Deacon” William became “Willie” the horrible. Jan kept William in her peripheral as his voice got louder and louder. “Oh, so I gotta be like the preacher for you to say something encouraging?!!!”, “You know, you’re a piece of work….” . William ranted on. Jan began to pray within herself until Williams’s words became faint and unclear. “Lord, help this man understand what I need from him. Please help us!!!”. . As Jan prayed, she felt a lump in her throat as she tried to hold back the tears.   William had a way with words that could make Jan feel worthless.     William talked so harshly with her that it didn’t even feel like a Sunday anymore. William’s incessant yelling and fussing eclipsed the joy that Jan had from the worship service.. Sunday’s joy? Gone already. Sunday’s zeal? Out the window. Though the worship services lasted for two hours, the ride home seemed eternal. She dreaded going home. She dreaded another week of not knowing how many times she’d be yelled at like a child, or shaken like a rag doll. Home was not her favorite place. Monday through Saturday were not her favorite days. She thought to herself, “God, why does Sunday wear off so quickly?”
